Aksla Viewpoint is the place to go for a stunning view of Ålesund. Choose between walking the 418 steps to the top, or let the hop on hop off bus driving you all the way. Ålesund is among the most important Norwegian fishing harbours. In 1904, a disastrous fire destroyed all the buildings, though everything was rebuilt at the initiative of the German emperor. Since then, the centre of Ålesund offers a unique view of buildings in Jugend style (Art Noveau).

Bybrann Monumentet Iginis
Right by the tourist information, you will find the Town Fire Monument, memorating the terrible fire in 1904. On the pillars you will find pictures of the town centre, as it was before the fire took it all away, and pictures of the rebuilding.

Ålesund Church
The first church located where Ålesund Church stands today was built in 1854, but unfortunately destroyed by the big fire in 1904. In 1906 already the new church was planned and designed by Sverre Knudsen. The organ in this church is among the largest in Norway.

Ask the bus driver to stop at Steinvågvegen, and a walk from there to The Atlantic Sea Park will take 5 minutes. There are also ordinary bus routes to The Atlantic Sea Park going from the centre of Ålesund all weekdays (Not Sundays). Buses are marked «Akvariebussen».
